COURSE HISTORY

Prior to the property being purchased by The Port Huron Elks Lodge 343 in the early 1970’s, there was an established 9-hole golf course known as “Hidden Valley”. An additional 9 holes were added in 1974 to complete the 18-hole championship course as stands today. The additional 9 holes were designed by Lloyd Maxfield. Mr. Maxfield’s imagination and creativity, along with the overseeing eyes of the Exalted Ruler, Harold Coulston, and then Esquire, Mike Innes, brought to life the Port Huron Elks Golf Club as we know it today.

The First Head Golf Professional of the Club was Lloyd Maxfield, followed by Danny Thomas, and then Rick Bond. Fred W. “Fritz” George III took the reins next, with Brian D. “Bo” Bowman as his assistant. Mr. Bowman took over and had Kyle Bailey as his assistant. Upon Brian D. “Bo” Bowman departure in 2022, Cody J Swarts was brought in as the Head Golf Professional for a season. Jeff Bassett was hired in 2023 as our Pro Shop Manager and continues in this position.

The vision from the beginning was to offer a playable course for all levels of golfers; challenging enough to ensure strategic play is always considered but rewarding enough to bring members and guests back for more. The Port Huron Elks Golf Club was established as a private golf course and will remain as such for the foreseeable future. It is the mission of the club to deliver the best private golf club experience to its members and guests alike. Grass has gotten greener, ponds and waterways have expanded, trees have come and gone, and yet The Port Huron Elks Golf Club remains the crown jewel of golf in St. Clair County. It is incumbent upon all staff, members, and guests of the Club to understand and share the rich history of The Port Huron Elks Golf Club to ensure that the story continues to be transcribed.
